I have a nice little ThinkPad Edge 13 and it's a great machine, really - amazing cost vs value. I've happily been running it for more than a year (so yes, the basic warranty has expired) and I've attempted to get a new battery for it - which failed in the usual insidious way: apparently the machine won't accept non-Lenovo batteries. This is a big #fail for Lenovo and means that this will be my first and last ThinkPad. ... except if anyone knows how to unlock batteries?
The situation with cell phones locked to carriers is bad enough, but batteries? That sucks.
The battery is probably not broken by itself - as I've already exhanged as "malfunctioning", but Google finds numerous complaints that Lenovo (at least for some markets) ships with laptops locked to OEM batteries.
I always thought there's an EU prohibition against it?
